Pornography legalised...

DISCLAIMER: The following material may be offensive for some. Read it at your own discretion.

The other day I got an oppurtunity to see an interview of Kamal Hasan. He was pretty open and direct, as he always is. The topic of discussion was meandering and touching various topics when at last it got to the topic of this post- Legalising pornography. What follows is a brief recollection of the discussion.

DISCLAIMER repeated.

One of the greatest studs in the international film industry, Mr.X (I couldn't remember his name), who was also a member of a well known jury, came up with this proposal, it seems. He was chucked off for this seemingly offensive idea by the superficial minds. First, it seemed too offensive for Kamal as well. But on deeper reflection, it dawned upon him that it was indeed a great idea.

Kamal's claims in favor of legalisation:

'Curiosity kills the cat'. Particularly in India, where a guy gets to feel his carnal pleasures at the age of 25+ on an average, this curiosity is bound to get ten fold. Inability or lack of infrastructure (particularly with the uneducated masses) in getting the desired information leads the bewildered curious minds to such extents of frustration that they get into 'practical experimentation' . The easiest access they have are sex-workers...STDs follow spelling their lives into doom.

One interesting fact Kamal pointed out was that in many schools, the encyclopaedia pages depicting the male and female anatomy were glued in order to 'not corrupt' the children's minds.

If porn is legalised, every common man gets to see the "most concealed taboo" of the society for ordinary prices. He'll see it once, twice...may be even hundred times. But he has found a vent to his desires. Once he gets to know of the essentials, that's it. "Is that all?". He stops watching these and starts concentrating on his life-ambitions. This is atleast better that this won't get him any STDs.

Seemed pretty logical to me!

A good one.. i feel that there is an age limit only after which one should know something...if young children are exposed to porn in their early years, then i would be devastating. They are not matured to atleast understand what it means. But definitely after a particular age, they should know about it. I would say sex education would be a good idea rather than legalising porn. It may be an oppurtunity to vent ones desire but may not educate them properly.

I was shocked to hear a news about two school students invloved in sexual act in some school in delhi. If school children are like this...this is not a good sign. Formal education should definitely set a better path for youth in the society.

Good one da Ramsy. Curiosity arises only if something is concealed. Dei pura, I don't completely agree with u regarding the age limit. Y should education be the first priority for students??? I agree that it is the safest path to lead a "better life". But, most of the time, I don't see it to be the best path in terms of the returns. Many of us are not happy with the job. What do u say?

srini kutty,

By education I meant something which say the good and bad parts of sex..not only class education..it can be education through mass media, or books..something like that.. i dont think a "porn movie" can educate a person rather a way to vent ones desire ..as of I know..and regarding the age limit.. naturally there should be a maturity in ones mind to understand a fact correctly..any comments?

Rest aside, I think porn movies, in no way, are good to the society. It only urges the viewer to get into wrong ways.

Sex education is the best- that point cannot be refuted. But it is people who don't get this basic education who get lost. It is for these masses that this idea might prove useful. Probably the porn movies that are screened should mandatorily contain an educational session with a video (explaining the basic differences in anatomy, etc.) and also a basic age limit enforced. Once an explanatory note is given, with proper clarifications of the basic doubts an adoloscent may have, it would help, even if not all, at least a handful.

I cannot empathize with the comment that these movies, "in no way" are gud to the society. I am not getting into the details of this as it might invite more disclaimers. One thing I would point is that "Each and every phenomenon will have both -ves and +ves". So, before making a general comment, deeper reflection of the issue at hand might help!

My exhusband apparently had an addiction to pornography. It went from there to live sex shows and then prostitutes. Maybe it's OK for some people, but it was his ruination.
